This Tower is the symbol of everything that reminds of the once-mighty Upper Castle in Vilnius. The Upper Castle was destroyed after the World War II. The West Tower (Gediminas’ Tower) is the only Tower of the Upper Castle that has remained until the present day.
Gediminas‘ Tower is called by the Grand Duke Gediminas name, who built the castle, existed in the distant past. Nowadays the Tower attracts both citizens of Vilnius and history lovers.
Now the Gediminas’ Tower is on the Gediminas Hill near the Vilnius Cathedral. The top of the Tower reaches 50 metres from the base of the hill. The Castle was a secure stronghold for the enemies because of the scarps and nowadays it has become a secure stronghold for the visitors of Gediminas’ Tower. To solve this reason there was constructed a funicular, which visitors can use to reach the top of the hill. There is a broad observation spot at the top of Gediminas’ Tower. A great panorama of the city can be observed from the Tower.
Besides spectacular view from Gediminas’ Tower, visitors also can have a view of interesting exhibition explaining the history. The tower houses various findings from the different areas that surround the hill, ammunition and arms, detritus of the Upper Castle and other archeological values, which can be interesting for not only professional historian but also for every visitor.
The history of Lithuanian flag is also concerned with the Gediminas’ Tower. First time the current tricolour flag was re-hoisted atop the Gediminas’ Tower on January 1st, 1919. For that reason after the Lithuania’s Independence Restoration, the 1st of January was announced as a Flag Day.
