Gediminas Avenue

The duke Gediminas, according to legends and history sources, is the founder of Vilnius. His name is well known for every citizen. It is small wonder that the main city street is called Gediminas Avenue. The life always boils here. One day there are fairs, parties, and concerts; another day – artists’ shows, exhibitions, parades.
         International financial corporation “Jones Lang La Salle” included the Gediminas Avenue in the list of 30 most luxurious European streets. In the Avenue, which is 1700 meters long, is a plenty of restaurants, hotels, entertainment places, clothes and shoes shops, banks, etc. In other words, if you want to spend your time shopping, the Gediminas Avenue is a perfect place for that. Especially it is worth to go to the “Gedimino 9” supermarket, where you can find everything in one place – from bookshops to hairdresser’s parlours.
         Despite a plenty of shops, the main street of Vilnius distinguishes for its number of sightseeing. There are main governmental institutions of Lithuania, such as the government, parliament, Constitutional Court and ministries. It is also the place of cultural institutions such as Lithuanian National Drama Theatre, Bank of Lithuania, Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre. There are two squares in Gediminas Avenue. One square is called by the name of the author of Lithuanian Hymn, Vincas Kudirka. In the centre of this square is the memorial to this outstanding figure. The memorial looks very beautifully, especially at night. Beyond, in front of Music and Theatre Academy is Lukiskes square. There you can rest, have an eyeful of flora, and even have dinner.
         Another remarkable object in Gediminas Avenue is Martynas Mazvydas National Library. The monumental building, which is near the House of Seimas, surprises in size, and the inside atmosphere tells about the long experience. There are organized tours, exhibitions, artistic events in the library.
         The best two theatres, National Drama Theatre and Mazasis Vilniaus teatras (Little Theatre of Vilnius), are located in Gediminas Avenue too. It is also possible to find various sites that will satisfy fans with any musical taste. On the terrace, among the citizens called "Opus", are jazz performances, and the nightclubs, scattered all over the Avenue, attract electronic music fans; and the bar “Musė” located at the crossing of Jaksto Street regularly attracts rock fans.
         In the main street of Vilnius sometimes are various parades, and the most famous of them is Vilnius University student procession on the 1st of September. Each year, representatives of various faculties are competing to represent what they are studying. The representatives should represent their specialities impressively. A huge crowd of students surprises anyone who comes to look at them.
         Gediminas Avenue is famous for the boiling life since ancient time. This street is to everyone according to taste, and none leaves disappointed. A large entertainment and service offering makes Gediminas Avenue the place you need to visit.
